A performed exhibition by John John and Hippolyte Hentgen The notion of the birthday is both self-evident and mysterious at the same time. It requires everyone to join in, even those who try to keep anyway. Yet, the meaning of such a ritual is always subjective and provides a unique experience for each individual. For Hors Pistes, artist duos Hippolyte Hentgen and John John embrace the complexity of this ritual. For three weeks, their project ‘The Birthday Catalogue’ presents film, drawing, performance and sculpture in a whimsical ethnological inventory of the multiple components of birthdays. They attempt to delineate this ceremony from every angle.
