The French Consulate General in Shanghai is pleased to present, for the second year in a row, an exhibition of French artists in the heart of the West Bund.

Without Fanfare - On the Border of Dreams” (Sans tambours ni trompettes – A la frontière du rêve), curated by Myriam Kryger, with the collaboration of Margo Renisio for the exhibition’s scenographic design, brings together sixty works from fifteen contemporary artists, from well-established artists in the contemporary French scene with international fame to emerging young artists who have won critical attention.

Whether rendered in oil, wax or acrylic on canvas, or gouache, watercolor, charcoal or ink on paper, the works shown in this unique exhibition capture the artistic vitality of contemporary painting from France, which has long been enriched by talent from around the world- including China, of course. The charcoal sketches of Szeto Lap and the never-before-shown portrait by Yan Pei-Ming embody the continuing importance of the artistic relationship between China and France.

This exhibition includes several series, notably Seul à Versailles, a fabulous group of ten wax paintings created by Philippe Cognée specifically for this project and exhibited for the very first time thanks to the great support of Galerie Templon ; the fascinating series of 12 “Hybride” , by Françoise Pétrovitch; the series “Dans le Fruit” and “Mes Espèces” , composed of nine gouache and collage works on paper by Guillaume Dégé, which boast a rare elegance ; and last but not least, Henri Michaux’ ink wash paintings from his series “Personnages sur fonds de paysage” .

This exhibition was made possible by the support of nine galleries, private collectors, and Guangda Museum- for which we are very grateful.
