Deliberately ironic, this exhibition presents itself as a seemingly seductive reflection of our world, showcasing the work of artists inspired by the feline figure. Cat People—its title referencing Jacques Tourneur’s 1942 film—seeks to illustrate the relationship described by Jacques Derrida in what the animal reveals about the human. How do we project ourselves, how do we approach the “other” through the domestic figure of the cat? The cat comforts us—hence the surge of cute kitten videos on social media—but it can also unsettle us, symbolically reflecting the ills running through our crisis-ridden Western societies.
The exhibition Cat People. Artists and Cats explores this complex bond that ties us to cats through various thematic approaches such as anthropomorphism, the stray cat, animal ergonomics, and kitsch.
