The town of Melle boasts an exceptional architectural heritage. To better showcase it, the municipality has, for the past thirty years, pursued an ambitious cultural policy focused on contemporary art.
This cultural commitment is reflected in exhibitions presented within Melle’s architectural and natural heritage sites—its churches, temple, the Hôtel de Ménoc, parks, and the Discovery Trail—as well as throughout the town itself. In 2003, Melle hosted its first International Biennial of Contemporary Art. Since then, ten biennials have highlighted the historic heart of the town while making contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience. More than 160,000 visitors and 150 artists from around the world have come to discover the treasures exhibited within this unique setting. Contemporary art has become a defining feature of the local identity.
