To coincide with Jean-Marie Appriou's exhibition La cinquième essence at the MO.CO. Panacée this summer, the MO.CO. is devoting a major solo exhibition to Françoise Pétrovitch, one of the most influential and popular artists on the contemporary French scene.
Born in Chambéry in 1964, Françoise Pétrovitch has been developing a prolific body of work since the 1990s, drawing on a wide range of media and techniques including ceramics, bronze, video, painting, wash and drawing. In a constant dialogue with the artists who preceded her, she takes traditional subjects from the history of art - portraits, landscapes and still lifes - and bends them to a new reading of the world marked by the absence of hierarchy. The ambivalent worlds she creates, populated by a galaxy of living beings, from animals to plants to the immense diversity of human beings, play on paradoxical atmospheres that oscillate between the visible and the invisible, between light and darkness, between the unaltered and the hybrid. This porosity of boundaries allows François Pétrovitch to place at the heart of his work questions of the intimate, the fragment, the double, disappearance, solitude, transition and cruelty.
The exhibition at MO.CO. is resolutely ambitious. Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, it covers all the mediums and themes addressed by his work, including his relationship with staging, and brings together nearly 130 works produced between 1994 and 2025. Some of these works, particularly from the 1990s, will be shown to the public for the first time, while others - around thirty - were produced specifically for the MO.CO. project.
